After Treatment with Fixed Braces

When the braces are removed, the teeth want to go back to their original position. To prevent this, the treatment is concluded with what is called retention.
Retention means that the teeth are stabilized with a retention brace (retainer) that can be removable or consist of a metal wire glued to the inside of the front teeth. Sometimes a retention brace must be used for a very long time. Despite this, a certain return to the original position can occur, depending on changes in growth and function. The risk of the teeth going back is greatest in the first years after treatment.
If you want to maintain the result, you must use your retainer; this is your responsibility. It is important that you follow the advice and contact us if something chafes, comes loose, or does not work. Contact specialist dentistry during the first year, then your regular dentist.

Removable retainer:

A removable retainer can be a plastic splint (Essix) that should be used every night for 5 years. Thereafter, according to your dentist's recommendation. It is important that the splint fits and always goes into place. If it pinches and tightens, it has been used too little, and the teeth have moved.

  • Remember:
Take out the retainer when you eat, drink, or brush your teeth.
Be careful with your retainer – when you do not have it in your mouth, store it in a box.
Clean it daily with a toothbrush, soap, and lukewarm water.
Bring the retainer to every visit to the dental care.

Fixed retainer:

A fixed retainer, also known as a bonded or glued retainer, consists of a metal wire attached to the inside of the front teeth. This wire, which should not cause any problems, can remain in place as long as you wish to keep your front teeth straight. It is important that it is checked regularly during your regular visits to your general dentist.
